PROPOSED ENLARGEMENT AND RECTIFICATION OF THE UNLAWFULLY CONSTRUCTED BRANDWAGT UPPER DAM ON THE REMAINDER OF PORTION 77 OF THE FARM BRANDWAGT NO. 187: NOTIFICATION OF AVAILABILITY OF THE AMENDED FINAL S24G EIA REPORT

S24G ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT PROCESS: (DEA&DP Ref No: 14/2/1/2/B2/32/0016/16)

The Applicant, Beukes Broers Trust purchased the Remainder of Portion 77 of Brandwagt Farm No. 187 in 2015, unaware at the time of purchase that the Upper Brandwagt Dam on the property was constructed unlawfully. It is the Applicant’s understanding that due to financial constraints of the previous owner, only Phase 1 of the intended capacity of this existing dam was built. The Applicant seeks to therefore legalize the existing dam of existing storage capacity 94 272m3 via the S24G process of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and if so authorized, to enlarge the dam to its originally intended capacity of approximately 292 040m3, thereby completing the construction of the dam.

Following the comment period for the Final S24G EIA Report which ended on 15 August 2017, the EIA Report was submitted to DEA&DP for decision making on 23 August 2017. Correspondence was received from DEA&DP, dated 7 December 2017, requesting additional information, prior to decision making on the application. In order to respond to the DEA&DP correspondence of 7 December 2017 (Included as Appendix I5 of the Amended Final EIA Report), additional Botanical and Engineering inputs were required. The outcome of those investigations has generated new information, and as a consequence the Final EIA Report has been amended and updated to take account of the new information.

Holland and Associates Environmental Consultants have been appointed by Beukes Broers Trust to assist in fulfilling the legally required environmental process for the project. The Amended Final S24G EIA Report has been made available to the public for a 30 day comment period, and is downloadable via the link below.
